When you see this in a friend's LJ, post Shakespeare...
“Now is the winter of our discontent
Made glorious summer by this sun of York.”
The play “Richard III” is a vile and loathsome piece of Tudor propaganda, with no basis in fact, that has made one of England’s greatest and best-loved kings hated and despised for centuries. Only that opening sentence has the ring of truth.
The play is an example of the power of words. Shakespeare’s poisonous slander turned Good King Richard into a murdering monster and people believed it. I prefer to go by the words that I have seen written in the chronicles of the city of York.
“This day good King Richard late mercifully reigning upon us was through great treason piteously slain and murdered to the great heaviness of this city".
I've finished my nights on shift at work, but tonight I'm going out for a meal with my work colleagues. I'm off to get changed now and will be leaving shortly - no time to reply to Comments until I come back.
