More movie moans... - Words in the Heroes' Tongue

More movie moans...
I keep reading Lord of the Rings fanfics and hitting utter idiocies of plot and drastic out-of-character actions from characters; I have my fingers poised on the keyboard, beginning to write scathing reviews, and then...

...I realise that the offending sections are taken directly from the movie. The fic-writer is guilty only of using the movie-verse rather than the book-verse.

Why, oh why, did Peter Jackson have to change things so much, and always* for the worse?

(*With the exception of giving Glorfindel's role in The Fellowship of the Rings to Arwen; I thought that was an improvement over the original).

I actually prefer the films to the books.

I'm quite happy with chunks of the film version - without the elves at Helm's Deep I'd have been stuck with no choice but Legomance.

But then PJ does the odd think of saying they were sent by Elrond - when it should, surely, have been Celeborn, or Galadriel at a push.

You could have inserted Figwit.

The best film adaptation of a book ever was 'The Princess Bride'. Of course it did have the advantage of William Goldman writing both the book and the screenplay, something Peter Jackson couldn't have arranged unless the Professor had returned from death as Tolkien the White...

I am definitely a Lord of the Rings purist. IMO all the original material in the movies was wasted screen time where they ought to have been featuring what really happened. I have no particular problem with Arwen replacing Glorfindel. I do have issues with leaving out Aragorn healing the wounded Faramir and Eowyn (thereby proving that he was the returned King) and The scouring of the Shire. Oh, well, I agree that PJ's version is most likely the best one we will get.

BTW, on the plus side, VM is an excellent rider.
