I'm ALREADY absolutely sick to death of the talk about the Royal Wedding.

As far as I'm concerned they're not even Royal - the last rightful King of England was 'piteously slain and murdered' on 22nd August 1485 - and I don't give a toss who they marry or when.

And Cameron's speech to the BBC made me want to punch him. He said 'Great' so many times he sounded like Tony the Tiger - only without the charisma.

I'm willing to bet that whenever it happens, it will somehow manage to screw up my travel plans / daily routine some way.

The date the bookies are favouring clashes with next year's WriterConUK so it might screw up my travel plans too!

I much prefer weddings that include alien pregnancies...

Well, according to David Icke they are alien lizards anyway.

Say what you will about the Royal family, they're still better than the alternative...

It's what I said - just as in 1981, we have a dire economy, misery caused by brutal cuts, and Tory PM making a huge deal of a wedding. Pabulum to the masses.
I'm not planning a street party.

:snort:

I'm wondering how long they had to confine the happy couple in separate dark rooms before they agreed to distract the populace with bread and circuses.

A fellow Ricardian! There's a little commemorative statue of Richard III in Leicester, where I went to uni in the early 90s, which caused me to investigate...and gain much sympathy for this much-maligned monarch. But 'last rightful'? If usurpation rules out ones entitlement, then the last rightful king can be said to have been Harold Godwinsson ;-).

I was going to say Richard II, but you trump me with your leap backwards in time.

I'd say Edward the Confessor, actually; Harold was a bit of a parvenu...

True, but he was elected by the Witenagemot (though given the political situation at the time, perhaps that was the only real choice they had if they wanted to try and keep England for the English)...

Somebody is getting married? I obviously automatically blot out any news of the royals.

Look at it this way. It could be worse. You could have Sarah Palin and nightly updates about her life and dumb stuff she says on twitter.

Oh please. I got fed up with the whole "Chas and Di" show, the papers full of yet-more-speculation on what the dress will look like/how many page boys there will be/Yaaawn!
The Tories must be delighted to have such a nice distraction from cuts and tax increases.
Bet who *won't* be told they must cut back on expenses...

We will all be exposed to far more than we want about the Royal nuptials.

What I want to know is does she ride horses? It seems to be a necessary interest for the British royals. Diana didn't ride and you see how well that went.

Last rightful king by what criteria? If you consider Richard's claim via descent from William the Bastard to give him legitimacy then right of conquest also legitimises both the Tudor claim and the House of Orange. If you consider invitation to be the legitimising criteria then Harold Godwinson, Charles II, William IV and George I all qualify but William I, and hence Richard III, doesn't.

Richard III has a claim to be the last English king, the last rightful King of England is a far dodgier matter.

To be honest I have never been so grateful for the existence of the bloody royals as yesterday as otherwise not even British TV would have provided much relief from the TV spectacle of our little Banana Republic sliding inexorably down the crapper.

But otherwise yes and yes and thrice yes. I've nothing against the pair and got to see lots of nostalgia inducing pictures of St Andrews Uni but aside from that 'enough already!'

You're sick to death of it? I'm a descendant of John Adams and I can't figure out why we give a damn. Cripes, most Americans ancestors got here after the revolution and from places other than England.

Besides, it's still the friggin' House of Hanover no matter how it's dressed up.

Sorry if this was too much of a rant.
