Dreamwidth
I've followed the herd and created a Dreamwidth account - a paid one, as the invite code that they claimed those who created OpenID accounts there would receive never turned up.

I am speaker_to_customers there - that should be easier for people to spell.

I have to say that so far I loathe and detest all those features of DW that differ from LJ - the available schemes are hideous and the terminology sucks. I'm only there because I dread everyone else going and leaving me behind.

My OpenID account there will, of course, be abandoned - it wasn't possible to convert it to a DW account.

Ditto, for the most part.

I've mostly got an account so that I can comment, so that I don't get left behind, and so that I can (potentially) back up my LJ.

Still not sure if I'm going to do anything with my account...

There are a few things that I like about DW, but you're right -- the available schemes are horrid.

Yeah, I haven't quite caught onto the DW high. I think it's gonna be more bother than it's worth to crosspost from there. Plus, like you mention, the available schemes are meh. Also, while I know a lot of people who have moved over, there's also a large number of people on my flist who haven't. I don't know that the BtVS fandom is gonna abandon LJ, honestly.

Yeah, I'm mostly staying here.

I have been given, unasked for, an invitation, which I will probably take up. If it is possible to really take my whole LJ going back to 2004 over there, then it would be a good back up.

But to me that ability to split the list in two is extremely insulting - "You are good enough for me to be interested in what you say - but you're not good enough to read any, or much, of what I say..."

And I don't see it that way at all.

You might not, but I still do.

Not only do I agree with you on the splitting thing, but I predict that DW will have to move away from this soon and be just like LJ, whether for technical reasons or something else.

I can't get over the pinkness of the screen that comes up; it makes the thought of actually looking around to change it kind of nauseating.

It seems like they've put a major FUD-like meme over on the LJ community and elsewhere. "Quick! Join up here before all your friends leave you behind!"

Interesting. I don't mind the color scheme; but IJ's makes me cringe every time I go there.

I do like the ease of importing my journal, and of cross-posting.
ozma914 From: ozma914 Date: May 2nd, 2009 06:11 am (UTC) (Link)
I wasn't worried about being left behind -- until today, when it seemed like all my flist was announcing they were moving over. :-0

As it seems, from people's comments, to be very easy to crosspost, and apparently it even sends our LJ comments to their DW or whatever, I'm guessing it will just mean people doubling up. And then we wait to see how many of them keep up with this. As the real community is here, I think the chances are that, in many cases, any tendancy to then only keep one journal up will end up with them drifting back to this one.

If I were one of my elves I migh be tempted to put money on it...

I hope you're right ...

Okay, I've asked this about myself, so I don't mind asking it of others: "And I'm so important that people will want to read the same thing I've said in 2+ different places because?"
bogwitch From: bogwitch Date: May 2nd, 2009 08:26 am (UTC) (Link)
I think I'll cross-post now I've worked it out, but I don't see any reason to decamp. DW has advantages, but LJ has what we really came for - the community.

I agree with Boggy.

They sent me an invite code, so I wonder if yours is just lost somewhere, bouncing through the ether.

I'm another one who's got account just so I don't get left behind! And also because, while it's unlikely, I don't like the idea of anyone else being cbtreks - just keeping my name for myself, you know? It'b been my main Internet handle for almost 14 years.

Thank you for this information. I was also wondering where my 'free' account was. I, now, also have an Open ID account. I might be able to use it for something else.
hobbituk From: hobbituk Date: May 2nd, 2009 09:27 pm (UTC) (Link)
I'm only keeping it as a backup. It's similar enough to LJ to be comfortable. I do have codes available if anyone wants one though, so they don't have to get a paid account to try it out. I just need an email addy from you to send the invite to...

Open ID

When I discovered yesterday that Open ID didn't work for DW as promised, audela mentioned you'd had the same problem. I'm not a paid acct on LJ and likely won't do it at DW either, but I am curious if the Open ID thing was misinformation or if it's supposed to work but isn't.

You had to pay to get an account? That sucks. My invite link was waiting in my inbox Friday morning, I wonder what happened....

I'm with you on all fronts. There's something hinky about the terminology and organization - it tries to be hopeful and creativity-friendly, but ends up obtuse and impersonal. And yeah, the schemes suck (you can't even have a sidebar on the left! And the calendar doesn't fit in it!).
