Strange influences...
Did anyone else notice that a chunk of Obama's inauguration speech was lifted from Tom Clancy's 'Debt of Honor'? The speech that President Durling makes after the Japanese villains have crippled America's financial markets.

I didn't, but that preacher guy lifted the lyrics of Big Bill Broonzy's "Black, Brown And White".

Word for word? Weird!

Not quite word for word but very close - too much so to be coincidence, I think.

You're not talking about the same thing that I'm talking about. You must be referring to the song that beer_good_foamy mentions in his comment (and of which I'd never heard); I mean the section of the speech where he was talking about American factories still producing goods, American farms still growing crops, and so on, and pointing out that the financial crisis does not affect the real strengths of America. That's what came from the Tom Clancy book.

Whoops, sorry! Response posted on wrong thread!

And I certainly didn't intend to accuse him of plagiarism, any more than Obama "plagiarized" Thomas Paine in his speech; hell, the entire blues tradition rests on creative borrowing. :-)

Huh, it was a great speech in the book, too!

And serving the same purpose - let us hope that it will be as successful as Durling's speech. Of course the enemies who took down America's financial markets this time weren't sinister external enemies, who can be assassinated with a stealth helicopter attack, but greedy Americans.

Arguably greedy everyone. But point well taken!

Still, you wouldn't get a lot of arguments towards stealth helicopter attacks from various friends who are loosing their jobs!

There's been several times that, not long after I'd read a Tom Clancy novel, something would happen to make me think 'hey, that's sort of like... in the novel (with greater or lesser specificity)"

Debt of Honor has a greater number of hits like that than any of the others, though...

It may have been ripped off -- or stuck in the mind of -- one of Obama's speech writers. Obama doesn't seem to be the Tom Clancy type, as far as his personal reading list.
