Complete bafflement
Belated happy birthdays to alwaysjbj, spikesdeb, and edenfalling.

I've just heard the news that Amy Winehouse has won five Grammy awards. Huh? What on Earth is going on? Is this some kind of joke? Was it a mistake and they were really intended for Amy MacDonald? They can not be serious.

Or has the whole world (and not just the Archdruid of Canterbury) gone mad?

I believe the idea is that once she dies, she'll retroactively become a troubled genius unrecognised in her own lifetime; hence, everyone's trying to recognise her early and get chops for that.

It baffles me because not only is she a pathetic junkie who can't even stand up straight on her own but she's not even much of a singer.

Given that her main rival was Kanye West (sic - I'm not bothering to look up the proper spelling) I could see my votes going her way too. The Grammys are peculiar at the best of times and, musically, these are not the best of times.

Who would you vote for?

I wouldn't have voted for any of the nominees - but surely there must have been tens of thousands of more worthy artistes who could have been nominated instead. In fact I can't think of anyone less worthy.

In fact I can't think of anyone less worthy. Oh I can but then due to the presence of small children in the house I know more than I care to about Europop dancey shit. It has been so long since I have expected the whole Grammy circus to make any kind of sense, let alone have any integrity artistically that I cannot muster up much passion. Same for the Emmys and the Oscars too.

Love the Tabula Avatar banner btw! I don't think I said that before. It is cool! Giles's expression especially is perfect but all the faces are nicely in character. No Sorkatani but then perhaps that is for the best as I am free to imagine her as I wish.

In reply to your question "who would you vote for?" I originally said that I wouldn't have voted for any of the nominees - but I've since found out that Feist was nominated in 4 categories and so obviously I would have voted for her.

Really?! Well then I am all with you on the travesty bus.

I generally follow the Chuck D. line about Grammys, so I remain unsurprised at her five awards. I'll accept that as affirmation for the Dap-Kings, who are to my ears as good as the classic backup bands from the Motown and Stax/Volt studios. And I like what little I've heard.

I repeat.

Like.

The only things she has on Sharon Jones is that she's not black and she's not sober.

That's she's a total shambling wreck of a human being is far more a part of her deal. I get that. I far far far prefer the early SRV stuff when Stevie was dissolving his coke in booze to the post-sobriety stuff, and I'm a big fan of Van Halen when DLR was such an exhibitionist asshole that Eddie had to get his drink on hard to loosen up an upstage him. I at least have the decency to feel conflicted about it, but "She's going to drug herself to death and she might even die onstage" seems to be the core attraction.

I remember many years ago going to see Free at Newcastle City Hall when Paul Kossoff was so stoned that he was completely unable to play. The crowd began to chant "Piss off, Kossoff!" and I joined in. The ticket price was a lot of money to me back in those days and I expected that the group should have repaid my expenditure by being able to give at least an adequate performance of their songs. And the late Paul Kossoff had more talent in his little finger than Amy Winehouse has in all her scrawny tattooed body.

Also I have a theory that her husband is an alien. I mean, no real human could possibly be called 'Blake Fielder-Civil'; that's a name put together out of random words, and much less successfully than Ford Prefect's.

I got to "no real human could possibly be called 'Blake Fielder-Civil'" and had to take my son out to the bus, so, before I finished the sentence, I thought "So he's from Betelgeuse and not from Gilford as you thought."

I will insist that she's a heck of a singer, though. When she is sober enough to make sentences.

I don't think that such awards mean anything today. It's just show anyway.

Come on guys!
I mean, once they started to toss around with Grammys like with old candy...there's no way that once can take those serious!
speakr2customrs From: speakr2customrs Date: February 12th, 2008 11:29 am (UTC) (Link)
In giving awards to that shambling, screeching, wreck they've lost whatever credibility they still possessed.
spikesdeb From: spikesdeb Date: February 11th, 2008 11:47 pm (UTC) (Link)
Thanks so much. And I totally agree; I just don't get what the fuss is about Amy Winehouse. She looks dreadful, sounds dreadful and has the charisma of a squashed slug. If she's the best in the music business, I think we need to go back and reinvent the guitar or something.
speakr2customrs From: speakr2customrs Date: February 12th, 2008 11:32 am (UTC) (Link)
There are thousands of singers out there who are infinitely better than that screeching mess. It seems that fame, even if it is fame achieved by being too stoned to perform and having a husband who appears to be a right villain, can get rewards that actually possessing talent can't.

I've never heard Amy Winehouse (that I know of; it could have been on the radio as I drove with my daughters). I did hear that they let her out of rehab to attend the Grammy awards; that says a lot about priorities.

I've never heard Amy Winehouse

You're lucky.
